Otaki River

Our aim is to be able to educate participants on how to harvest rongoā sustainably using tikanga Māori while at the same time, collaboratively working with council to keep the pathways tidy for the public.

As Rongoā Practitioners, we saw a gap in the cycle of sustainable restoration projects along our local waterways. Disappointed by constantly seeing native plants being cut back in unruly ways, especially harakeke, we thought it would be better for us to be able to harvest the plants and at the same time keep the pathways tidy. We approached council with our idea of working collaboratively with them and they were very supportive. This means that we can align with our kaupapa and ensure tikanga is upheld throughout the whole process.
